Admissions

Our staff takes great care to determine if Weingarten Children’s Center is the appropriate placement for your child and family. We want every child to advance and succeed in our program so prospective school students and therapy clients are first seen for a screening.

How To Get Started

Step One:  Fill out our questionnaire. If you are interested in enrolling your child for class and/or to receive Listening and Spoken Language therapy (LSL) or occupational therapy, please fill out the Prospective Family Questionnaire form.

Step Two: Send reports and schedule a screening. After completing the questionnaire, we will contact you by phone or email. At that time, we will request to review relevant reports (e.g. IFSP/IEP, speech-language evaluation, audiological report, occupational therapy evaluation report, etc.) and will ask for a signed release of information form, so we can contact allied professionals if necessary prior to your screening appointment. Screening appointments are subject to scheduling availability, but typically happen within 2 weeks of inquiry.

Step Three: Screening with a Speech Language Pathologist. The screening takes approximately 30 – 60 minutes. In some cases, a short-term diagnostic trial at WCC and/or a comprehensive evaluation may be necessary in addition to the screening session.

Step Four: After the screening, if appropriate, a short tour of WCC is offered. This is frequently done on the same day as your initial screening and will be arranged when we contact you in Step Two. During these times of COVID-19, we are not doing any on-site tours. Virtual observations of morning music and a portion of class time may be scheduled if appropriate.

Step Five: After the screening, the Director of Student Services and/or the Director of Teleintervention Family Services, will contact you with recommendations and resources. If it is agreed that WCC is a good fit for your child and family, the office will send you enrollment forms. Once this paperwork is completed and submitted a start date will be determined. You will be introduced to your child’s teacher and/or therapist. Then get ready to listen, speak, learn, and have fun!

PLEASE NOTE: If you are seeking school district funding for class and/or therapy, please contact your district for an IFSP/IEP to discuss placement options [San Mateo County | Santa Clara County]. While we contract with many Bay Area school districts, the offer of FAPE or Free Appropriate Public Education, means we may not be the district’s first choice since we are a private California state accredited organization. For those families paying privately, enrollment may begin once all required enrollment forms are completed and returned.

If you plan to seek insurance reimbursement for therapy, most insurance providers require an evaluation prior to therapy starting, along with a doctor’s prescription for both the evaluation and therapy services. At this time, the only insurance that we contract with is Kaiser Northern California. Some children are eligible for therapy utilizing their Kaiser benefits. Please refer to IF YOU INTEND TO SEEK REIMBURSEMENT document and the INSURANCE CODING GUIDE It is the responsibility of each family to know and understand their insurance provider’s benefits and coverage.
